Darwin to Maningrida can comfortably be driven in one day. It takes about 7 hours. The main obstacle is the fact that the East Alligator River can only be navigated safely at low tide so the timing of the drive is restricted. We stopped in Jabiru to break up the drive and give us time to observe the famously dangerous crossing. We did spot one good croc at the river but in every other respect this was the easiest crossing on the journey. Paved and shallow it felt perfectly safe. The car wheels visible downstream were evidence of the stupidity of people crossing inappropriately rather than the innate danger of the crossing at low tide.
Driving into Arnhem Land was some of the most breathtaking country we have driven through on this journey. Magnificent rocky landforms, lush country with wetlands and birds everywhere we looked.
The road from here was in variable condition with multiple beautiful river crossings.
We arrived in Maningrida in good spirits. The kids were so delighted to be reunited with their toys and books and spent much of those first few days playing intently with lego, bey blades and babies. Luca and Zoe made some amazing lego vehicles and Charlotte gave birth about 10 times. I felt like a very young Grandma but the kids were happy so who was I to complain??
Missing you guys! Hope all going well in Maningrida. Love and hugs to all of you xx
