Alice Springs

In two parts because we went before AND after Uluru. Our host Karen was kind enough to let us use her place in her absence initially and we took her up on it when Luca became quite unwell. Just a 'flu (fevers, cough etc) and he was quickly on the mend. The second visit we had the pleasure of her company.

Alice is a really lovely town. You enter it through a gap in the MacDonnell Ranges which circle much of the town. It sits on the usually dry Todd River which is lined with the usual magnificent Red gums. I stayed here for a month as a medical student and the amazingly complex relationship between medical staff and the aboriginal people here combined with some of the extreme presentations were a significant part of my enthusiasm to seek more remote medical experience. This time we got to rest up in our luxurious accommodation (thanks Karen!), do some shopping, have a belated mother's day brunch at a good cafe, visit the excellent local pool and generally catch up on life's basics.

Ed was most impressed with the Transport Museum.

My highlight was our walk along the Todd River to the Old Telegraph Station. A huge technological achievement in the 19th century the Overland telegraph and its history were fascinating and the old buildings by the river were beautiful. Knocking out morse code on a rigged up line was particularly significant for Luca who has been sharing morse messages with his mate Thomas.
